Peloton Workout Plan and Schedule for Weight Loss

Everything About Peloton Live Classes

In 2014, Peloton began releasing their now highly popular stationary bikes with interactive classes for those looking for a spin class experience without leaving the comfort of their home. Not soon after, these bikes, and Peloton themselves, exploded in popularity and even came out with a Peloton treadmill, known as Tread+. If you didn’t have a Peloton bike or treadmill already, you were trying to get one. But for those of us who are still on the fence, how do the Peloton live classes work?

Whether you have a Peloton bike, treadmill or neither, Peloton offers thousands of live and on-demand classes through their Peloton memberships. These interactive workouts range from cycling, running, strength training, and yoga. You can choose a workout that fits your goals, music taste, experience level, and schedule. This membership streams directly to your Peloton bike, Tread+, smartphone or smart TV.

If you have never tried a workout app before or you are unsure if this type of class will be for you, Peloton now offers a free 30-day trial for their online membership. They will even remind you 7 days before your free trial ends, so you don’t get charged if you don’t love it. This risk-free opportunity allows anyone to sample the Peloton membership before buying. Now that we know we can give it a try for free, let’s take a deeper look into Peloton live classes, their schedule, and how they work.

How Do Peloton Live Classes Work?

Peloton offers both live and on-demand classes available with Peloton memberships. Live classes are streamed from Peloton studios in both New York and London. The main difference between live and on-demand is that live classes allow participants the opportunity to get shout-outs and high-fives from the instructors for achievements or special events.

How Often Are Peloton Live Classes?

The choice of live classes available will vary depending on where you live and when you want to take the class. Peloton does live classes daily, with cycling, strength training, running, and yoga being among the most popular choices.

Those who enjoy the social aspect of exercise classes will likely prefer live classes over on-demand. During these live classes, you can see and engage with your classmates just like you would in an in-person exercise class. Live classes are recorded and then available on-demand for those who missed them.

Are Live Classes Included in My Peloton Membership or Free?

Both live and on-demand classes are included in the Peloton membership fee. They do not offer these classes for free via the Peloton app. For those who live in New York or London where Peloton instructors do live courses, you can attend a class in person.

  • For those in New York, the first class starts at $20 and then is increased to $32 per class after that.
  • They also offer packages for those who wish to go more frequently, which provide a discount on the more classes you purchase at one time. For example, you can purchase a 5-pack of classes for $150, a 10-pack for $290, a 20-pack for $540, or a 30-pack for $750. You also have the option to purchase unlimited classes for $400 a month.

Peloton Studios in New York also offer free classes in the afternoons. These are shortened classes that are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Peloton studios in New York are not currently offering in-person classes due to the ongoing pandemic. For further information on booking future classes, you can visit their online studio support.

How Much is a Live Peloton Class?

For those who do not live in New York, to access both Peloton’s live and on-demand classes, you need a Peloton membership, also known as the “Connected Fitness” membership or the Peloton digital app, known as Peloton’s “Digital Membership”. The Connected Fitness membership costs $39 per month and is for those who have a Peloton bike or treadmill. The Digital Membership costs $12.99 a month and is geared towards those who do not have any Peloton equipment.

A Connect Fitness membership is not required when you purchase a Peloton bike or treadmill but it is strongly encouraged. If you do not purchase the Connect Fitness membership, you will only have the option to choose between the three pre-loaded workouts on your machine.

You can purchase the Digital Membership without having any Peloton equipment. Both memberships offer the same live and on-demand classes. The main difference between the two is that those with the Peloton bike or treadmill have access to track their performance and see their position on the leaderboard.

For those who are interested in purchasing a Peloton bike, the cost starts at about $2,245 and the treadmill starts at about $4,295. Peloton offers financing options for both their bike and treadmill. For more information on the cost and how to purchase a Peloton bike or Tread+ you can visit the Peloton Website.

Are Peloton Live Classes Worth It?

If you have the Peloton bike or the Tread+, the Peloton classes will be worth the cost. Not only do you have a large variety of workout options, but you will get the most out of the equipment that you have purchased.

For those who do not have the Peloton bike or Tread+, the digital membership live classes are an excellent deal for what they provide. Even though you do not have the specific Peloton workout equipment, you can participate in the live courses while at the gym or using your home equipment.

In the end, whether a Peloton live class is worth it depends on what you are looking for in your workout. If you have purchased the Peloton equipment, you will get the most out of it if you have the membership for live classes. For those who prefer a lot of guidance and enjoy classes with others where you can compete, support, and engage in on-another, you will likely enjoy these live classes the most. The beauty of peloton live classes is it works for both those who enjoy a community and those who enjoy the comfort of working out at home without other people around you.

Before You Take It: What to Expect from A Peloton Class

If you are curious about how to prepare for your first Peloton Class, you can wander over to One Peloton’s blog article titled “Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Peloton Class” where members provide tips for newbies to the world of Peloton. Tips include navigating the app, adjusting your equipment, and staying safe during your workout.

Members share essential items for those getting into Peloton for the first time, such as the importance of proper clip-in shoes and padded bike shorts for those who have purchased the Peloton bike. It also explains how to find your Functional Threshold Power (FTP) to track your fitness, the importance of finding an instructor that best motivates you, and the benefits of being a part of the Peloton community.

Can You Do Peloton Live Classes Anytime?

Because the Peloton live classes are scheduled on certain days and times during the week, you cannot do them anytime. However, every live class is streamed on-demand for those who wish to participate but cannot make the scheduled class time. Luckily, classes change daily, so you aren’t doing the same classes repeatedly. More popular classes tend to be available at more times during the day and week for those to experience the live event.

Does Peloton Only Have Live Classes?

Peloton offers live classes, on-demand classes, and Encore classes. Live classes are like any other in-person fitness class except we are doing them from home, like a Zoom meeting but for a workout.

On-demand classes are those classes that have been recorded and are available to complete at any time. This means you do not have to wait for a class to start at a specific time, you can take it whenever works best for your schedule.

Encore classes are recorded classes that have been re-streamed in the live schedule. This means you are joining a pre-recorded class. However, you will still have the live leaderboard so you can compete with friends.

Can You Ride Peloton Without Classes?

The Peloton bike and Tread+ have the option to “Just Ride/Run” for those who do not wish to participate in the live or pre-recorded classes. This option allows you to ride for as long as you want without an instructor. To find this feature, you need to select the “More” tab on your home screen for the option to “Just Ride” or “Just Run” depending on your equipment.

Peloton Live Classes vs Recorded

There are benefits to both live and recorded on-demand Peloton classes. Live classes provide the comradery of group exercise that can help with motivation, allow friends, family, and even strangers to compete with one another, and get a sense of community.

However, live classes can sometimes be challenging to coordinate with your schedule, especially for those on the west coast who have fewer class times available during the day and early evening hours. Some may prefer to avoid live classes due to preference of working out alone or anxiety with comparing themselves to others and their fitness journey.

On-demand classes may not provide as much of a sense of community, but they do allow for you to complete any class at any time that works best for your schedule. Some prefer to work out on their own and on-demand classes allow for that without the stress or anxiety of competing with others. They are more versatile and allow for you to choose what class you want and when you want it, which can be a drawback of the live classes.

In the end, one choice is not superior to the other. Which choice is best will depend on the person choosing the workouts. Many Peloton enthusiasts prefer a nice mixture of both live and pre-recorded classes to allow for more flexibility but still feel they are a part of a team.
