Is Lavash Gluten-Free? (No, Here’s Why)

Is Lavash Gluten-Free

Lavash is a common dish in South Caucasus, Western Asia, and the areas surrounding the Caspian Sea. Lavash is a thin flatbread that is suitable for wrapping. This thin flatbread is traditionally cooked in huge portions in large ovens before being sliced up into more manageable rectangles or triangles. So, is Lavash gluten free?

No, Lavash is not gluten-free. Lavash is a simple dough containing wheat flour, which is made into a flatbread. The most traditional brands of Lavash are Joseph’s, UNO, and Astoria’s. The best gluten-free alternatives to Lavash include Cali’flour Original Flatbread, Wrawp Original Wraps, Unbun Tortillas, and Keto and Co. Keto Bread Mix – Flatbread & Pizza.

In this article, we will review how Lavash is made, how to eat Lavash, the nutritional information of popular Lavash brands, and alternatives to Lavash. At the bottom of this article, there is a homemade recipe to try and make your own Lavash. Let’s dive in!

How is Lavash Made?

Wheat flour and water is kneaded and formed into balls, which are then rolled into thin layers and stretched over a special oval cushion that is then slapped against the wall of a traditional conical clay oven. After thirty seconds to a minute, the baked bread is pulled from the oven wall.

How to Enjoy Lavash?

You can diversify the tortilla with different ingredients, which you can enjoy at breakfast, lunch, or afternoon meals, next to your salads and soup. You can make wraps with jam, mashed chocolate, chicken, or herbal cheese, and prepare tables to suit your taste. Lavash is the perfect way to eat Middle Eastern favorites like hummus or baba ghanoush, and other creamy dishes that are just begging to be dipped into with bread. There are many more uses for lavash, though. Armenians use it to wrap up cheese, and Turks and Iranians use it to wrap up their kebab meats

Homemade Lavash

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil, for brushing
  • 1 (1/4-ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

What you will need:

  • A small mixing bowl
  • A large mixing bowl
  • A stand mixer with a dough hook attachment
  • Plastic wrap
  • Rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • A sheet pan

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the yeast, water, and sugar. Stir until the yeast is dissolved.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients to form a dough.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment, knead the dough for 10-12 minutes, until the dough forms into a ball.
  4. Place the ball of dough in a large, oiled bowl. Coat dough with additional oil, cover with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature in a warm place for 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough doubles in size
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release air. Continue to knead it for 5 minutes.
  6. Divide dough into 8 separate pieces and roll into balls. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Using a lightly floured rolling pin, roll a ball of dough into a thin rectangle about 12 x 10-inches. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  8. Transfer the dough to parchment-lined sheet pans and puncture tops with a fork. Brush dough with water and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Remove from oven and onto a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes. Eat fresh lavash while still warm.
