How to Cancel Equinox Membership

How to Cancel Equinox Membership

Equinox epitomizes luxury fitness, and for a premium at that. As an Equinox member, you’ll have access to a well-stocked, well-maintained fitness floor, unlimited classes, an in-house pro shop, and other premium services including fitness assessments and personal training. Equinox is a very competitive fitness center. When it stops working for your schedule or your wallet, it may be time to call it quits.

You can cancel your Equinox membership in person, by registered or certified mail, over the phone, or by email. Typically, Equinox requires 30 days’ notice of the cancellation. If you follow their steps and provide appropriate notice, you should incur no fees for the cancellation. Members can also pause or freeze their Equinox membership for a fee.

Many gyms are famous for giving you the runaround when you try to quit. Read on to find out the best ways to cancel your Equinox membership painlessly!

How Hard Is It to Cancel Equinox Membership?

Relatively speaking, it’s not hard at all to cancel Equinox membership, provided you have been there for longer than one year.

Most gyms lock you into long contracts that keep you paying for a full year or more, even if things go awry. Equinox is one such gym, and so quitting in the first year can be problematic.

Unless you provide them with proof that you are moving more than 25 miles away from their location, they keep you on the hook for that full year.

If you’ve been with them for some time though, you have options. You can choose one of many multifarious methods to process your cancellation ASAP.

How Do I Cancel My Equinox Membership?

Ready to pull the plug on Equinox? There are many ways to do it.

In Person

  1. Visit your Equinox location and ask for the club manager.
  2. Inform them that you’d like to cancel your membership.
  3. The club manager will guide you through the process.
  4. You’re all set!

Remember– you need to provide 30 days’ notice, or they will hold you responsible for the next bill. They also will not waive buyout fees within the first year of your membership.

Certified Mail

  1. Locate your Equinox’s address here.
  2. Write a letter indicating you would like to cancel your membership.
  3. Include membership information including name, address, membership number, and contact information. We do not recommend including credit card information.
  4. Bring it to your local post office and send it certified with receipt confirmation.
  5. Repeat all steps for the corporate office if necessary.

Equinox advertises that you can cancel via certified mail, but former members online report conflicting information that can make it difficult to say for sure if it’ll be successful. To be extra safe, send the same letter to Equinox’s corporate office at:

By Phone

  1. Call Equinox Concierge at (866)-332-6549.
  2. Inform them that you would like to cancel your membership.
  3. Follow their prompts and answer all questions.
  4. You’re all set!

By Email

  1. Create an email explaining that you would like to cancel your membership.
  2. Send email to [email protected].
  3. Send email to [email protected].

Equinox posts two separate email addresses that allegedly can help you discontinue your membership. We recommend trying the Cancellations address but sending an email to the Members Administration address if you turn up no response.

If all else fails, going in person is always the quickest and most reliable method of canceling.

Does Equinox Have a Cancellation Fee?

Technically, there is no fee to cancel your membership. However, there are some provisos to keep in mind.

Equinox requires 30 days’ advance notice of your cancellation. For this reason, you will likely pay at least one month of additional membership fees even after you go in and say the words to the manager. Keep this in mind when you’re considering quitting and budget accordingly.

Quitting in the first year can be especially expensive. There are no cancellation fees, per se, but you will be responsible for all remaining membership fees for the year per the terms of the membership agreement.

Put simply– if you sign up at all, you’re in for a year minimum.

Can I Pause My Equinox Membership?

Members are welcome to pause their Equinox membership. A pause or freeze to the account must last one full month at minimum and may not exceed three months at maximum. Each club charges a fee to freeze. This fee is usually in the range of $30 to $35 per month.

This is considerable savings considering the average monthly membership cost of Equinox is $260. If you need to freeze your account, contact your club staff at your earliest convenience.

For more details regarding account freezes, contact Equinox at [email protected].

How to Contact Equinox

Most business with your Equinox should be handled at the club with the club staff. You may Google the club’s information or find it here.

If your Equinox club staff just is not cutting it, however, you may reach corporate by dialing (866)-332-6549.

Should I Cancel My Equinox Membership?

If you are trying to get into better shape, have plenty of money in your fitness budget, and generally like Equinox’s facility and as a company, then you should stay at Equinox. Equinox is one of the most luxurious fitness experiences out there, so it’s a great value if it fits your budget.

Planet Fitness is not in the same category, but it is only $10 to $20 per month as compared to Equinox’s staggering $260 monthly. Between the ultra-conservative Planet Fitness and the ultra-luxe Equinox, there is a lot of middle ground.

Equinox does have 300 locations in most major cities in the United States, but 35 of them are in New York. Compared to 24 Hour Fitness’ 400+ locations and other prevalent chains like LA Fitness and Anytime Fitness, there are more ubiquitous choices for your fitness home.

Best Alternatives to Equinox

LifeTime Athletic

If you’re looking for a direct competitor to Equinox but at a somehow more affordable price, LifeTime is a no-brainer. Featuring an enormous fitness floor, ample selection of classes, pools, basketball and tennis courts, juice bars, yoga studios, cycling, and even more, there’s nothing you could think of at Equinox that LifeTime doesn’t also have.

Each club has their own pricing, but members should expect to pay approximately $150 monthly at LifeTime, as compared to $260 at Equinox. For a gym that’s essentially offering the same thing, LifeTime wins the category easily.

SoulCycle

SoulCycle is a great way to get a good workout in but still feel the status associated with premium establishments like Equinox. Riders can pay $38 for a single class or purchase various packages up to the 30-class package for $960. Even attending class numerous times, a week will likely remain less expensive than Equinox.

Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness is definitely a step down from Equinox, but that’s what makes it such great value. While Equinox offers top notch accommodations to a refined and sophisticated clientele, Planet Fitness is offering virtually the same stuff at a fraction of the price.

You could enjoy 2 full years of Planet Fitness and pay less than 1 month of Equinox.
