How Much Does CrossFit Cost? (Plans & Discounts)

How Much Does CrossFit Cost?

For more than two decades, CrossFit has enjoyed unprecedented popularity in the fitness realm. Millions of people worldwide participate daily in their unique program that combines strength building, Olympic lifts, and metabolic conditioning. Many people get great results from regular CrossFit, and are living their healthiest, happiest lives because of it. As CrossFit’s popularity surges, unfortunately so do the prices.

The average price for an unlimited CrossFit membership is approximately $180 monthly. Many CrossFit boxes offer memberships for $100 to $150 that include 3 classes per week. Single classes or “drop-ins” are generally allowed for approximately $15 to $30 per class. Because CrossFit boxes are affiliate owned, there is no uniformity to the offering and prices may vary per location.

With so many membership options and prices, it may feel daunting to get started doing CrossFit. Read on for tips in figuring out what options will work best for you.

CrossFit Membership Cost

Because CrossFit boxes are affiliate owned, there’s no uniformity to the price list. A modest CrossFit box in Arkansas will be considerably less expensive than a sprawling megabox in California. Numerous factors determine how much an affiliate should charge. This includes cost of living, rent, overhead, and quality of the services on site.

With over 13,000 boxes in 120 countries, there is a lot of variation to the pricing. Here are some average figures to give you an idea of what to expect.

Plan TypeWhat’s IncludedPrice
UnlimitedUnlimited classes~$180
Standard3 classes per week, or 12 classes per month~$125
Drop-In Class1 single class$15 to $30
Personal Training1 one-on-one session~$80

Keep in mind– CrossFit affiliates are not related to one another beyond the name. Some boxes might offer discounts to members of other CrossFit boxes or to traveling CrossFitters. However, your membership to one box means nothing to another box in most cases.

There is no pass that allows you to take classes at any CrossFit anywhere.

Which CrossFit Plan is Right for Me?

CrossFit plans are as diverse as can be.

The best plan for you will depend on your current fitness level, schedule, and budget.

Unlimited plans are enticing because they offer a lot of flexibility. Elite athletes looking for a competitive edge or new way to structure training will love daily CrossFit. By adding CrossFit to the mix, they’ll enjoy results and supplement their other training immensely.

For elite athletes that plan to do CrossFit daily, the unlimited plan is best.

For beginners and individuals of average fitness, CrossFit every day is unnecessary and borderline dangerous. Your body needs time to rest in between workouts. Showing up to the WOD everyday will stagger your progress if you’re new to fitness and increase risk of injury.

Unlimited plans are expensive and demand a lot of time. It’s hard to get to the gym while managing work, kids, and other responsibilities. CrossFit is even harder because class starts when it starts. You can wander into the gym whenever, but you need to be on time for CrossFit to participate.

For these reasons, a 3 class per week plan is best for beginners and individuals with other responsibilities.

Are CrossFit Classes Worth It?

CrossFit classes are worth it as they provide a great way to get into the best shape of your life.

There are a number of benefits you will receive from regularly sweating it out at CrossFit:

  • Improved strength and conditioning
  • Increased agility and balance
  • Better cardiovascular performance
  • Better endurance
  • Increased mobility and flexibility
  • Healthier weight
  • Look and feel great!

CrossFit classes often mix strength sections with metabolic conditions or “WODs” for a comprehensive workout. Through this approach, you will see improvement to your athletic performance over time.

CrossFit is known for its wide and welcoming community as well. As a CrossFit member, you will be part of that community and find friends in your home box, as well as boxes worldwide.

Between the numerous physical benefits and the social pros, CrossFit can add a lot of value to your fitness experience. You may even start identifying yourself as an athlete.

CrossFit vs. Regular Gym

CrossFit is a structured, group activity. You show up to CrossFit. They lead you through the warm-up. They lay out the plan. You execute. The pros at CrossFit take the planning and programming out of your hands and allow you to simply show up and sweat. Plus, they come to know your abilities and can offer advice on how to scale. It’s kind of like having a personal trainer without paying the premium for personal training.

In this regard, CrossFit is a much better option. It is more engaging and makes success easier to achieve.

However, some gyms have taken note of CrossFit’s popularity and created similarly structured classes to compete. Premium gyms don’t hide it and will outright call these classes “CrossFit style.” If your gym offers this, you may not need CrossFit at a local affiliate-owned box.

In this regard, CrossFit is often better than the regular gym, but not always.

How Many Days a Week Should You Do CrossFit as a Beginner?

If you are a seasoned athlete, you could feasibly start off doing CrossFit every day and probably be fine.

If you are a beginner to fitness in general, you should do CrossFit no more than 3 times a week.

We love to imagine our results before we’ve even done the work. Show up to CrossFit to sign up. Next, we text our friends and families and blast it out on social media. We lay down hashtags to let everyone know that we’re going to join the #fitfam and live that #hotgirlsummer this year.

The problem is that we’re not machines. It’s easy to say that you’ll be at CrossFit every day, but CrossFit is hard, and our bodies need rest. You don’t get results from the gym. You get results from resting and recovering from the gym. If you never allow yourself a moment to breathe, your body will break down and you will risk injury.

To avoid this debacle, start out at 3 classes per week. You can always ramp up if you feel it’s too easy.

Does CrossFit Offer Any Discounts?

CrossFit usually does not offer discounts for single memberships. However, your local CrossFit box may intermittently offer specials.

Perhaps their membership options include a sign-on fee. They might run a promotion that waives the fee for a limited time. Perhaps they may even consider special pricing during select times during the year.

Unfortunately, it’s all subject to the affiliate owner. Just like any small business owner, it’s at their discretion if and when promos are appropriate to drive sales.

The fitness market, like any other, is all about supply and demand. Some CrossFit boxes are so successful that they hit capacity and cannot offer membership at all. Boxes like this are a commodity. While demand is high and supply is inherently low, there’s no incentive for affiliate owners to offer discounts.

You may be lucky, but you shouldn’t expect to get a discount at CrossFit.

CrossFit Family Membership

CrossFit is popular for adults and children alike. Many CrossFit boxes offer classes oriented towards children or teens for this reason. With instruction and supervision provided by certified coaches, your child will get a crash course in personal fitness. The health benefits and discipline they learn can be invaluable throughout their formative years.

All around, CrossFit for kids and teens is great.

Because of this interest and value, many CrossFit boxes offer family plans. You might pay full price for your membership, but your spouse gets 10% off. Your first child is discounted 15%. The second and all subsequent children are 20% off.

CrossFit affiliates do not have to offer family membership options, but many do. Check with your local CrossFit box to find out.

Does CrossFit Offer a Free Trial?

Trial periods are determined by the affiliate owner at each local CrossFit box.

Some boxes may offer nothing, but usually they’ll give you at least one free class to see what you think. If not, many boxes allow for you to purchase a single class to try it out before committing.

We highly recommend trying CrossFit before committing to a membership.

Some CrossFit boxes might even offer a full week trial before busting out the papers and pens. Discuss with the staff at your local box to find out what options they have available.

Does CrossFit Offer a Guest Pass?

Many CrossFit boxes allow a free trial to any potential new members. This means your friend or family member might not need a guest pass. They would be entitled for a free class whether they were with you or not.

That said, some boxes will offer members an occasional guest pass. This might translate to one guest per month, one guest every few months, or a guest whenever but never the same guest twice.

It’s all subject to the policies at your local CrossFit box as determined by the affiliate owner.

Does CrossFit Have Any Hidden Fees?

CrossFit does not typically have any hidden fees.

Most boxes will require monthly dues and that’s it. Some may require a sign-on or initiation fee as well. Outside of this, it’s rare for CrossFit to include annual fees as most commercial gyms often do. An affiliate owner could incorporate annual fees, as these costs are often cited as “equipment upkeep” and the like. Many don’t though since CrossFit already costs a premium.

Does CrossFit Offer Personal Training?

Because you get the oversight of a certified coach at every class, you may not need personal training.

Some people prefer working out solo or cannot commit to regularly scheduled class times. These individuals will be pleased to know that most CrossFit boxes and coaches offer personal training.

The cost and availability vary by location and affiliate policies. Generally speaking, you should expect to pay approximately $60 per session at minimum. Some boxes charge well over $100 per session.

Unless you are averse to group fitness or cannot commit to a class schedule, you’re best off simply attending class. You will still receive personal oversight and insight from the coaches, but at a reduced cost compared to personal training.

Why Is CrossFit So Expensive?

CrossFit is expensive. Some of the most expensive CrossFit boxes in the world charge upwards of $200 or $300 for unlimited membership. In the states, Washington DC, New York, and Rhode Island are the most expensive places for CrossFit. The average prices for monthly membership are $260, $200, and $180 respectively.

There are many reasons why CrossFit is so expensive. For one, it’s simple supply and demand. There are millions of CrossFitters worldwide, so it remains a hot commodity. So long as people stay interested in the concept, prices will remain relatively high.

There are a number of reasons why that high cost is still a good value though:

  • Diverse training
  • Individualized attention
  • Professional coaches
  • Sense of community

CrossFit charges a premium, but you get some of the best training you can get anywhere amidst a welcoming community. It’s an exceptional fitness experience, but a strong social experience as well.

CrossFit Cancellation Policy

Canceling CrossFit often requires some notice. It also may require you to cancel in person. If you expect that you will no longer be able to continue CrossFit or simply don’t want to anymore, notify the staff at your local box immediately.

Policies will vary depending on the box and affiliate owner. Chances are they will be accommodating, especially if you were part of that all-important community for some time.

Check with your local box staff to find out before signing up.
