Are Eggo Waffles Vegan? (No, Here’s Why)

Are Eggo Waffles Vegan

“L’eggo My Eggo” has been a popular slogan for these frozen waffles since the 1970s.  Eggo waffles were invented to make breakfast easier.  Just place one in the toaster and a few minutes later, a hot steaming waffle is ready.  I grew up eating them.

No, Eggo Waffles are not vegan.  The Eggo Waffles varieties contain egg and milk products.  They also contain soy and wheat, so they are not gluten-free either.  The best vegan alternatives to Eggo Waffles include 365 by Whole Foods Market Frozen Waffles, Van’s Foods Original Gluten-Free Waffles, Nature’s Path Organic Waffles, and Kashi Gluten-Free Original Waffles.

From its humble beginnings in 1935, Eggo waffles has grown to be one of the most recognized brands.  Let’s talk about its history, ingredients, and what other waffles you could consider for a vegan lifestyle.

History

In 1935, Frank Dorsa and his brothers made the first Eggo waffles in their mother’s kitchen.  He made the waffles on a traditional waffle iron and then flash froze them.  They originally called their creation Froffles.  Customers started calling them Eggos due to the egg flavor, so eventually, in 1955, the name was officially changed.

Over the years, the Dorsa brothers tried to branch into other products, but the only one that had staying power was the waffles.

In 1968, Eggo was sold to the Kellogg’s company and its popularity grew.  Today, Kellog’s also makes Eggo Pancakes, French toast, French Toast Sticks, and Stuffed Pancake Bites.

Today, Eggo products are dominant on supermarket shelves.  Their website shows creative recipes to make your kids eat their waffles and fruit in the morning.  They are still advertised to make your mornings easier.
